When do I actually need my own policy?

It depends on your parents’ carrier, but most policies drop dependents at age 26 — similar to health insurance. Some carriers allow you to stay on until you no longer live with your parents. Check your parents’ policy for the exact cutoff, and start shopping 30 days before.

Will my rates be higher since I’m young?

Rates do tend to be higher for drivers under 25, but at 26 you’re past the worst of it. The key is shopping around — rates vary dramatically between carriers for young drivers. What coverage do I actually need?

At minimum, Massachusetts requires bodily injury liability ($25k/$50k), property damage ($30k), personal injury protection ($8k), and uninsured motorist coverage. But we recommend higher limits — the state minimums are quite low. Podium shows you tiered options so you can see the cost difference.

Can I get a discount for being a good student or safe driver?
